Climavision Expands Radar Capabilities Through NOAA Partnership
Climavision Strengthens Collaboration with NOAA
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has solidified its partnership with Climavision, a frontrunner in weather technology, by renewing its contract. This pivotal agreement enables NOAA to leverage data from 13 of Climavision's state-of-the-art radar sites, enhancing weather monitoring capabilities.
Enhanced Weather Data Access for Forecasters
Throughout the past year, the National Weather Service (NWS) has been actively utilizing Climavision's radar data across multiple states. This collaboration began as part of the National Mesonet Program, which aims to improve the operational efficiency of forecasters. By accessing valuable real-time weather data, NWS officials can better assess weather hazards and enhance field operations.
Expanding Radar Network for Comprehensive Coverage
Climavision operates a growing network of over 27 radars spread across 14 states. This extensive setup ensures high-quality data transmission, thanks to a dedicated team of skilled meteorologists and engineers. Specifically, Climavision’s innovative X-band radars fill critical gaps left by existing NEXRAD sites, providing essential data at lower altitudes—vital for tracking severe weather and ensuring public safety.
Investigation of New Data Utilization
Ajay Mehta, NWS Director of the Office of Observations, expressed optimism about this partnership, stating, "Access to low-altitude data may provide additional radar coverage for our forecasters. Our ongoing evaluation allows us to explore the use of X-band radar data in our Radar Next program.” This shows a commitment to integrating advanced technology in weather forecasting processes.
Support from NWS Leadership
Curtis Marshall, NWS Mesonet Program Manager, noted the significance of the National Mesonet Program in providing essential observational data to forecasters. Working with Climavision has enhanced the dissemination of radar data to various forecast offices and the Storm Prediction Center, enabling crucial analyses of weather trends.
Commitment to Future Development
Climavision has ambitious plans to deploy over 200 radar systems nationwide. With recent legislative support and the anticipated reauthorization of the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act, NOAA and NWS are eager to foster collaboration with private sector partners to spur technological advancements that align with their operational objectives. Chris Goode, Climavision’s CEO and Co-Founder, emphasized that their distinctive radar-as-a-service model uniquely positions them to support NOAA's mission effectively.
Community Safety and Resource Enhancement
Bill Callahan, Vice President of Federal Engagement at Synoptic Data, highlighted the benefits of integrating Climavision's radar data and managing the National Mesonet program. He expressed satisfaction with the enhanced resources available to weather forecasters nationwide over the past year, showcasing the positive impact of this partnership on community safety.
