Understanding the Dynamics of ASML and TSMC in Semiconductors
ASML and TSMC: Pillars of the Semiconductor Industry
ASML (NASDAQ: ASML) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE: TSM) are two critical players in the global semiconductor market. ASML leads the world in producing photolithography systems, essential for transferring circuit patterns to silicon wafers. Meanwhile, TSMC holds the title of the largest and most advanced contract chipmaker, employing ASML's cutting-edge systems in its manufacturing processes.
ASML exclusively manufactures extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, which create the smallest, densest, and most efficient chips globally. TSMC, as ASML’s largest client, leverages these EUV systems to produce high-end chips for various top-tier tech firms such as Apple, AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm.
Without ASML’s innovative technology, leading foundries like TSMC, Samsung, and Intel wouldn't be able to manufacture their most advanced chips. Thus, the absence of these foundries would significantly disrupt global semiconductor production.
Investors typically view ASML and TSMC as the bellwethers of the semiconductor sector. However, over the past year, ASML’s stock has risen by approximately 10%, whereas TSMC has more than doubled its stock value. This presents an intriguing opportunity to understand the reasons behind TSMC’s notable success and whether this trend will continue moving forward.
ASML’s Forecast of Slower Recovery
In recent times, ASML recorded impressive growth, with revenues increasing by 14% in 2022 and around 30% in 2023. Much of this surge is attributed to the rapid growth in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector and competitive advancements among leading foundries aiming to produce smaller and more sophisticated chips.
However, ASML anticipates that its revenue growth may stagnate in 2024 as it confronts the challenges posed by the AI market’s previous growth surge and stringent export restrictions impacting Chinese chipmakers. The transition from older "low-NA" EUV systems to the more advanced "high-NA" EUV systems has also introduced challenges for revenue forecasts.
While ASML initially projected a substantial 43% revenue increase in 2025 driven by its high-NA EUV systems—costing upwards of $380 million—recent earnings reports have tempered expectations to a growth range of 7%-25%. Analysts, however, still foresee revenue and earnings growth of 25% and 44%, respectively, in 2025.
One major factor affecting ASML's recovery trajectory is the semiconductor industry's cautious embrace of high-NA EUV systems. Many top companies, including TSMC and Samsung, have prioritized maximizing their low-NA EUV systems, delaying full-scale shifts to newer technologies.
TSMC's Position with Fewer Challenges
TSMC experienced a 34% increase in revenue during 2022 but faced a 9% decline in 2023, primarily due to a slowing PC market and the conclusion of the smartphone 5G upgrade cycle. Despite this, TSMC’s recent quarterly report revealed an improved outlook, elevating its full-year revenue forecast from mid-20% growth to nearly 30% growth.
This optimistic outlook is largely driven by robust growth in the AI sector and recovery in both the PC and smartphone markets. In the latest quarter, TSMC generated over 51% of its revenue from high-performance computing (HPC) markets, benefiting from partnerships with giants like Nvidia and AMD. The smartphone segment, including companies like Qualcomm, contributed another significant share of revenue.
Despite its reliance on low-NA EUV systems, TSMC’s continued focus on producing leading-edge chips at smaller nodes has emerged as a strategic advantage, allowing it to save costs in the current economic climate.
Comparing Investments: TSMC versus ASML
Currently, both ASML and TSMC are valued at approximately 23 times their forward earnings. While ASML remains a solid long-term investment, its slower growth compared to TSMC and heightened exposure to export barriers suggest that TSMC might be the superior choice for investors seeking growth potential. The ongoing trends indicate that TSMC is likely to maintain a stronger market position than ASML in the foreseeable future.
