Survey Highlights Need for Collaborative Innovation in Society

Survey Highlights Need for Collaborative Innovation in Society

Understanding the Need for Innovation

Challenges around the globe can sometimes feel overwhelming, yet the majority of people firmly believe in the capacity of innovation to tackle significant issues facing society. This insight comes from a multinational survey commissioned by Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE: PM), revealing strong public sentiments about innovation's role in future change. Conducted by Povaddo, the survey spans across ten diverse countries, providing a wealth of information about public attitudes toward innovation and the hurdles that may impede its progress.

The Survey's Key Findings

The survey shed light on various public perceptions regarding innovation. A notable finding shows that about 71% of participants believe that disruptive innovation can significantly enhance vaccine development and deployment. Additionally, around 62% view innovation as a means to ensure affordable and quality healthcare. However, opinions appear divided when it comes to innovation related to reducing smoking (49%) and illegal drug use (43%). This division reflects entrenched beliefs and the complexity of the issues at hand.

Polarity in the Innovation Debate

While a strong 76% of respondents express optimism about the potential of technology and innovation in the years to come, there is a growing concern regarding the polarized discussions surrounding new innovations. Approximately 74% agree that such polarization leads to consumer confusion. Furthermore, misinformation is identified as a major barrier to progress, with eight out of ten people in the surveyed countries acknowledging its detrimental influence.

Insights from the CEO

Jacek Olczak, the CEO of Philip Morris International, emphasized the company's commitment to scientific and technological advancements aimed at creating safer alternatives to traditional cigarette smoking. He noted, "As we strive to transition adult smokers away from cigarettes—the most harmful form of nicotine consumption—opposition frequently arises due to misunderstandings. It is crucial for individuals, especially policymakers, to examine the scientific evidence before dismissing the potential benefits of innovations that could promote public health."

Advancements and Global Examples

Mr. Olczak pointed to international examples, recognizing Sweden's low smoking rate and Japan's significant decline in smoking prevalence since the introduction of heated tobacco products in 2014. He advocated embracing innovations that reduce harm, stating, "In any other field, the adoption of safer alternatives would be met with enthusiasm. Instead, dissenting perspectives should not obstruct progress for the approximately 1 billion adult smokers globally or hinder public health advancements."

Challenges Posed by Rapid Change

The pace of innovation in today’s society presents various challenges, with two-thirds of participants expressing concerns that technological advancements are evolving too quickly for societal adaptation. The survey highlighted a demand for increased clarity regarding the risks and benefits associated with these innovations. Public skepticism and mistrust, often exacerbated by social media, also present significant hurdles. A strong majority, around 90%, conveyed that it is vital for governments to provide the public with access to reliable information about emerging innovations while developing equitable and transparent regulations.

Key Recommendations from PMI

Survey respondents emphasized the necessity for governments to confront misinformation (87%), promote collaboration between public and private sectors (83%), and cultivate open discussions concerning new innovations (82%). The survey culminated in a white paper titled “Innovation Under Pressure: Navigating Complexity to Drive Change,” which details the current innovation landscape and delineates actionable recommendations.

The Path Forward for Philip Morris International

Philip Morris International (PMI) remains dedicated to a smoke-free future, evolving its portfolio beyond traditional tobacco and nicotine products. Since 2008, PMI has invested over $12.5 billion in the development and commercialization of innovative smoke-free alternatives, aiming to halt the sale of traditional cigarettes altogether. This initiative includes enhancing scientific assessment processes and conducting extensive market studies.

Recently, PMI acquired Swedish Match, a leading figure in oral nicotine delivery. This acquisition aims to consolidate efforts towards a smoke-free world and supports the recognition given by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to PMI's IQOS devices as Modified Risk Tobacco Products. As per the latest figures, PMI's smoke-free products are available in 90 markets, with an approximate 36.5 million adults globally using such products, contributing to around 38% of the company’s net revenues in 2024.
