High prices on essentials such as groceries and gasoline have led 47% of consumers to indicate they will reduce their holiday spending. This reflects a conscientious approach to budgeting taken by many shoppers who are feeling the pinch from inflation, even as it shows signs of easing globally.

Martim Avillez Oliveira, Chief Revenue Officer of ESW, emphasizes the importance of retailers tuning into these changing dynamics. "Retailers can navigate the challenges of this upcoming holiday season by leveraging a robust global commerce platform. With 43% of consumers planning to shop more online, there is an immense opportunity for ecommerce retailers to attract these shoppers. Consumers are hunting for better prices in what promises to be a highly competitive market full of options," Oliveira noted.
Shoppers' Priorities This Year
As consumers approach their holiday shopping, the focus remains squarely on quality and price. According to the survey, 66% of shoppers highlight these factors as their top priorities when selecting gifts. In contrast, only 13% believe brand recognition is the most significant element during their purchasing process.
Emerging Trends in Holiday Shopping
The survey also revealed that social media plays a role in holiday shopping trends. While just over half of the respondents reported they wouldn’t turn to TikTok for gift ideas, a notable 65% of millennials and Gen Z consumers expressed their intent to use the platform for inspiration.
Key Shopping Days and Behaviors
When it comes to shopping days, traditional powerhouses still reign. The most favored shopping days are Black Friday (35%) and Amazon Big Deals Day (24%). Both outshine Cyber Monday (15%) and Columbus Day (7%) as preferred shopping dates for consumers looking for holiday bargains.
Shopping Strategies and Preferences
Interestingly, a significant majority of consumers—37%—have already commenced their holiday gift shopping. An additional 25% plan to start in October, while 30% will wait until November. Only a small fraction, about 8%, will begin shopping in December.

Consumer preference for shipping options is pivotal in their purchasing decisions. Nearly half (49%) of shoppers want the ability to return items for free. A majority (38%) are willing to pay between $1 and $9 for expedited shipping, whereas 31% refuse to pay for faster delivery. When it comes to waiting for free shipping, 41% are fine with a wait of 4-7 days, and 27% are prepared to wait 8-10 days.
