This is important because people who are undergoing chemo already have a huge chemical stew in their bodies. People who have had radiation have all the side effects of radiation exposure, and the breakdown products of dying cells.
So having something that is applied only on the area that's affected -- the oral mucosa -- rather than systemically, is MUCH safer because there is far less danger of an interaction that could either make the patient sicker, or cause the chemo or radiation to work less well.
