Crayola's wicks are cotton. I don't know about others but I don't think a polyester wick would hold a liquid dye very well.
Cotton breaks down at pyrolysis temperatures too. No need to go up to 600 degrees F, put a piece of cotton in the oven at 400 degrees for about twenty minutes and see if it starts charring. Disable your smoke detector first.
