Keep in mind, most of "winter" actually happens early in the year, not late. First day of "spring" isn't until the equinox each March. (March 20 in 2016, normally around the 21st).
"Winter" doesn't officially begin under the Winter Solstice, normally around 12/21. Technically, what is written is correct.
