Join the Fourth Annual Challenge to Innovate Global Food Systems
Submissions Open for Innovative Food System Challenge
CHICAGO-- The Seeding The Future Foundation and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) are excited to announce the opening of submissions for the fourth annual Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge. This initiative, which awards up to USD $1 million, aims to create and bolster innovations that can transform food systems, making them more nutritious, regenerative, and equitable.
About the Challenge and Its Goals
Hosted by IFT and launched by the Seeding The Future Foundation, the Challenge has gained significant traction in its initial three years, attracting over 2,400 submissions from interdisciplinary teams, including scientists, engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. These applicants come from various sectors, such as universities, non-profits, and research institutions, all united in their dedication to advancing food systems globally.
Key Dates and Application Process
Applications for the Challenge are due by January 6, 2025. Bernhard van Lengerich, the founder of the Seeding The Future Foundation, emphasizes the critical nature of innovation in today's ag/food systems landscape. He states, “The purpose of the Challenge is to inspire and reward teams of innovators who are creating impactful ideas that address the most relevant issues facing ag/food systems globally.”
Awards and Recognition
To further encourage creativity and advancement at all stages of project development, the Challenge provides three levels of awards:
Seed Grants
Up to eight Seed Grants of $25,000 each will be awarded to organizations that have developed innovative ideas with prototypes or concepts demonstrating their feasibility and potential impact.
Growth Grants
Three Growth Grants of $100,000 each will recognize organizations demonstrating that their innovations are implementable, scalable, and economically viable with high transformative potential.
Grand Prizes
The most prestigious accolade, the Seeding The Future Grand Prizes, offers up to two grants of $250,000 each for organizations showcasing innovations that are not only economically feasible but also trusted by consumers and impactful on health and the environment.
Celebrating Innovation and Collaboration
IFT CEO Christie Tarantino-Dean expresses enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The Challenge truly celebrates the unsung heroes of the global food system, and we look forward to seeing how this year’s entrants continue to elevate impactful innovation.”
New Database for Innovators
This year, an exciting addition allows applicants who progress through the review stages to secure a place in the Seeding The Future Global Food System Innovation Database and Network. This dynamic, peer-reviewed database will connect applicants with various global organizations committed to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme.
The innovative database is designed to facilitate AI-assisted searches for organizations engaging in specific agricultural challenges, such as greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, and more. Entries will detail each organization, including their project title, executive summary, and the anticipated impact of their innovation, thereby fostering collaboration between 'solution seekers' and 'solution providers.'
