Highland Electric Fleets Secures Funding to Advance V2G Tech
Significant Funding Boost for Highland Electric Fleets
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has approved approximately $10.9 million in cost-share funding for the Scaling Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Integration Nationally (SVIN) project. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of V2G technology across the nation through various pilot programs utilizing electric school buses.
Innovative Partnership to Propel V2G Adoption
This project is a collaborative effort involving Highland Electric Fleets, a leader in electric bus fleet electrification, 12 utility partners, and other educational institutions. By implementing 14 pilot V2G projects throughout the country, this teamwork promises to enhance how electric vehicles can assist the grid during peak demand and in emergency situations.
Key Benefits of Vehicle-to-Grid Technology
V2G technology enables electric vehicles (EVs) to supply energy back to the grid, thus enhancing its flexibility and reliability. These vehicles act as mobile energy sources that can provide vital support to the grid, especially in emergencies. With V2G integration, not only can energy costs be reduced, but it can also lower emissions from power plants, increase the use of renewable energy, and diminish the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.
Goals for the SVIN Project
The main objective of the SVIN project is to equip utility companies and regulatory bodies with essential data and operational experience needed to create sustainable V2G programs. According to Matt Stanberry, VP of Market Development at Highland Electric Fleets, this funding will demonstrate the effectiveness of V2G systems in ensuring a consistent energy supply to communities.
Support from the U.S. Department of Energy
This investment is part of the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program, which represents a significant federal investment geared towards improving the nation's grid infrastructure. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the DOE aims to prepare the electric grid for extreme weather events while ensuring affordable, clean energy and creating economic opportunities.
Collaboration for a Stronger Future
Highland Electric Fleets collaborates with various partners, including Dynamic Organics and Tierra Resource Consulting, to develop a V2G Policy and Program Toolkit, aimed at creating scalable and effective utility program designs. This is particularly crucial for optimizing utility operations to better serve customer needs, ensuring a more resilient energy system.
Job Creation and Community Support
This project is expected to generate around 778 jobs related to construction, installation, and utilities, benefitting local unions and fleet operators. Notably, several project sites are located within disadvantaged communities, further emphasizing the initiative's commitment to community engagement and support.
Highland Electric Fleets: Pioneering Electrification
Founded in 2019, Highland Electric Fleets is dedicated to transforming school districts and government fleets by facilitating a transition to electric vehicles. It operates across North America, being instrumental in launching the first commercial V2G program for electric school buses and successfully leading the largest electric bus initiative in the United States.
