The Best Ways to File for a Tax Extension Online

The Best Ways to File for a Tax Extension Online

The IRS does not write to tell you that your extension went through. It writes when it turns a request down, so if you hear nothing in the week after you file, it worked. Your proof then lives in two places. One is the account of the service that sent the form, and the other is the transcript the IRS keeps under your own name. Both matter in October, when a lender or a state notice asks what happened back in April.

1. FileTax.com

FileTax.com issues two numbers for one personal tax extension. Its own confirmation number arrives when the form goes out. An IRS confirmation number follows once the IRS approves the request.

Both come by email, and both stay in the account dashboard, so if you delete the email you can still read them off the screen in September.

You fix rejections in the same place. FileTax.com emails you the errors and says which of them can be corrected. You can send a corrected request back as many times as it takes. If you resend within five calendar days, it keeps the original Electronic Postmark Timestamp, and the extension counts from the moment it first went out. Every resend goes back into the same account, so the whole history of the request stays in one place.

2. FreeTaxUSA

FreeTaxUSA sends its email when the IRS accepts the extension. The message reports an outcome, so you know from reading it that the request went through.

It also names a status screen you can print for yourself. Sign in and open Account, then My Extension. The screen there shows your extension status and prints it.

The extension and the October return live in one account. You get back in through Account. Pick the year there and choose Switch to Regular Tax Return.

The software then prompts you for the extension payment under Misc and then Payments. The figure you enter goes to Schedule 3 line 10 and on to Form 1040 line 31. You can pay a balance owed from a checking account and date the withdrawal for the April deadline.

3. H&R Block

H&R Block files the extension inside its online return product. Open the Overview tab, go to Tax Filing Resources and choose File an extension. A short set of questions follows. You pay any balance due in the program before Form 4868 goes out.

When you e-file it, you typically get confirmation that the IRS accepted the request. H&R Block is open about what that confirmation is worth. The IRS runs no separate tool for tracking an extension, so the page sends you to Where’s My Refund, which tracks refunds instead.

Filing in the return product does one thing for you later. H&R Block tells you to put the amount paid with the extension into the payments section of Form 1040.

If your state wants its own extension form, the online program completes it.

4. TaxSlayer

TaxSlayer prepares the extension inside the account that will produce the October return. You reach the form from Tax Home or from the Federal menu. The page around it tells you when you need an extension and when the extended return is due, and it tells you to come back to that account before October 15.

One condition comes with that account. An account that already contains return data has been upgraded to a fuller return product, and you have to strip it back so only Basic Information remains before the extension will submit on its own. If you are reopening an account from a previous season, check for that in March, well before deadline week.

5. OnLine Taxes

OnLine Taxes prepares and sends the federal extension from the account your return will come from. It writes the steps out twice, once for a new account and once for an account you already have. After the request goes out you open View Forms, where you can print the completed Form 4868 and its filing status. That printout is what a preparer or a lender will accept in September, and it comes out of the same account that produces the October return, so nothing has to be rebuilt when you come back to finish.

How to Check That Your Extension Was Accepted

The IRS records the request on your own account, and you can go and read it. Order an IRS Tax Account Transcript from your online account. An accepted extension posts there as Transaction Code 460, described on the transcript as an extension of time to file a tax return. If a code 460 is posted in error, the IRS reverses it with a code 462.

Ask for the account transcript by name, because the return transcript will not show the code.

Give the posting a few days. In one documented case, a request accepted on April 15 showed up under a transcript date of April 17. That same filer watched the status line in the IRS online account say an extension had been granted, then change back the next morning to a return not processed. The transcript showed the code.

If Your Extension Comes Back Rejected

A rejection notice arrives in the account that sent the request, where it waits until you open it. Most rejections are identity mismatches. Reject code R0000-500-01 says the name and Social Security number of the first person on the submission are not what the IRS has on record. A name change made in the last week or two can be the cause, because the Social Security Administration takes about ten days to pass one along. A multi-part surname fails the same way, because the SSA database reads the third name in sequence as the surname.

If your request went out on time and came back rejected, you can correct it and send it again within five calendar days of the rejection notice. It keeps its original electronic postmark. A request that was already late when it first went out gets no such window. One rejection cannot be repaired by resubmitting at all. If a return has already been accepted under the same Social Security number, the correction goes through a local IRS office.

Order the transcript in May, while the filing is recent enough to fix. Keep the printed Form 4868 alongside it.
