Texas Supportive Housing Initiative Aims to Transform Lives
Texas Supportive Housing Institute Launches New Initiative
The Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation (TSAHC) and the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) have embarked on a significant new initiative dedicated to affordable housing. This fourth Texas Supportive Housing Institute initiative aims to create around 530 affordable and supportive housing units across various communities in the state.
Selected Teams and Their Goals
Six diverse teams from several communities, including Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, Denton, Marshall, and San Antonio, have been chosen to participate in this initiative. The Texas Supportive Housing Institute builds on a successful national event by CSH aimed at speeding up the development of Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). By combining affordable housing with comprehensive support services, PSH serves as a compassionate and financially efficient solution, especially for those experiencing homelessness or facing housing insecurity.
Vision for Successful Housing Solutions
David Long, the President of TSAHC, voiced enthusiasm about the launch, stating that it significantly enhances ongoing efforts to assist vulnerable Texans in finding safe and stable housing. He credited the success to their strong partnership with CSH and emphasized the importance of collaborative funding efforts that ensure high-quality training opportunities.
Transforming Lives Through Community Investment
The teams selected will undergo an intensive four-month training program, focusing on the intricacies of developing Permanent Supportive Housing. CSH's team will provide individualized guidance tailored to aid in project planning and fundraising. Moreover, the teams will have the opportunity to apply for low-cost loans specifically designed to support the pre-development phase of their projects. This educational initiative is provided at no cost, thanks to generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo.
Encouragement from Industry Leaders
Christopher Rios, Vice President of Social Impact and Sustainability at Wells Fargo, highlighted the bank's commitment to fostering programs that enhance affordable housing opportunities for Texas’s vulnerable populations. He praised the collaborative efforts of TSAHC, CSH, and the Institute participants, emphasizing the importance of creating safe and welcoming communities across Texas.
Broadening Impact Through Collaborative Funding
The Texas Supportive Housing Institute is also supported by contributions from notable organizations such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Dominium, Texas Community Bank, Regions Bank, Insperity, Frost Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, Capital Impact Partners, and Vecino Group, along with additional backing from Bank of America.
History and Achievements of Collaborative Efforts
In 2020, TSAHC and CSH teamed up to create the Texas Supportive Housing Institute with a clear goal: promote the development of Permanent Supportive Housing throughout the state. Since the inception of this program, 16 development teams have successfully completed their training, resulting in the creation of over 1,000 new PSH units across various regions, including Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Waco.
