Teamsters Local 2010 Expands Membership at University of California
In a significant labor development, Teamsters Local 2010 has recently welcomed over 1,000 new members from the University of California (UC) administrative workforce. This expansion comes after key decisions from the state labor board deemed many administrative workers previously misclassified as nonunion to be eligible for union representation.
The movement began earlier this year when 400 executive assistants joined the ranks of Local 2010. Following this, more than 670 financial services analysts successfully integrated into the union by September. This collective effort reflects the ongoing desire among UC administrative staff for enhanced workplace protections and fair labor practices.
With union membership now secured, these workers gain immediate access to all the benefits outlined in the current Teamsters contract. This includes vital negotiations focused on striving for improved wages, reduced costs associated with benefits, overtime compensation, job security, and an overall respectful workplace environment.
For many employees, the transition into unionization has been a long time coming. UC administrative workers have actively pushed for union representation for years. Their persistence has paid off, as the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) has granted necessary unit modifications, paving the way for these employees to join Local 2010's Clerical and Allied Services CX unit.
The impact of Local 2010's member power campaign is evident, leading to consistent wage increases for union members. There has been a stark contrast in the working conditions; the CX unit previously went five years without a contract or pay raises. The gains made since then are remarkable. By 2025, it is projected that Teamsters members will have benefited from compounded pay increases reaching 83 percent since 2011.
“As a new union member, I’m thrilled to join the Teamsters, which is renowned for its strength in labor movements,” expressed Angela Gross, an executive assistant at UC San Francisco. “Joining the Teamsters is an empowering step toward ensuring that the rights of all workers are respected throughout the UC system, and I’m proud to be part of this endeavor.”
Angela, who carries nine years of experience as an executive assistant, highlighted the importance of systems and support mechanisms in ensuring efficient operations.
“By joining the bargaining team, I can directly contribute to improvements that will benefit both the Teamsters and the UC,” she added. “Participating in this process helps ensure our collective voices are heard, aiming for fair wages, respect, and the rights that we deserve.”
Local 2010 Secretary-Treasurer Jason Rabinowitz shared his excitement about the new members, stating, “Welcoming over 1,000 executive assistants and financial analysts into our union is a fantastic milestone. This achievement reflects the strength of Local 2010. We've built a powerful collective voice that has spearheaded strong contracts and substantial pay increases for our members and their families.”
Another new member, Lynn Matevosian, an executive assistant at UCLA, has stepped up to become part of the bargaining team to gain a deeper understanding of union operations.
“This is my first experience with union work, and I’m eager to contribute to Teamsters because I perceive that union members generally have positive experiences with their representation,” Matevosian noted. “I look forward to engaging in collective bargaining as part of this powerful union, especially with the step system pay structure that the Teamsters have fought diligently to establish.”
The executive assistants commenced their bargaining process on October 1st, discussing various elements such as salary ranges, step placements, and eligibility criteria for different bonus structures.
Teamsters Local 2010 stands as a robust organization comprised of approximately 19,500 dedicated employees working within California’s higher education system. This union is affiliated with over 1.3 million members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters spanning across the United States and Canada. Together, they strive to enhance wages, benefits, and working conditions while protecting workers' rights through steadfast representation and active engagement.
