Teamsters at National Ready Mixed Face Unjust Lockout

Teamsters at National Ready Mixed Face Unjust Lockout

Union Takes a Stand Against Unfair Labor Practices

Union Demands End to Retaliation Against Workers

More than 300 Teamsters at National Ready Mixed Concrete faced a lockout recently after overwhelmingly rejecting a proposed contract that included significant concessions. This proposal was seen as detrimental to workers' rights, stripping away key seniority protections, allowing unchecked management power, and offering wages below industry standards. Workers affected include drivers, mechanics, and bulk material haulers spread across ten locations.

"Let's be clear. This isn't just about numbers; it's about respect for the workforce," stated Tom Gesualdi, Director of the Teamsters Building Material and Construction Trade Division. He emphasized that the issue isn't financial capabilities but rather corporate greed and lack of acknowledgment for the workers’ contributions.

The rejected contract was criticized for eroding essential workplace protections through unfair seniority practices and expanding management control, all while attempting to limit legal accountability according to the Private Attorneys General Act. This lockout not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of the Teamsters but also threatens the stability of hundreds of families who rely on these jobs.

Chris Griswold, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 986 and Vice President At-Large of the International Teamsters, condemned the lockout as a blatant attack on labor rights. "These Teamsters face tough conditions every day just to bring home a paycheck, and locking them out is an affront to every hardworking family in this region," he remarked.

This lockout follows the successful ratification of a robust contract by Teamsters at Catalina Pacific Concrete, which included no concessions and meaningful wage increases. This contrast sharply highlights the possibilities when companies engage in genuine negotiations.

Rickie Carter, a dedicated mixer driver with seven years of experience, expressed his frustration over the situation: "I’ve given my all to this company, yet they retaliate against me for upholding my rights. This is a test of our resilience, but we’re not going to give up. We aim to hold the company accountable and secure the contract that our hard work deserves."

The union has responded vigorously by filing multiple unfair labor practice charges, alleging insufficient bargaining tactics and bad faith conduct by the company. Their demands include an immediate end to the lockout, full reinstatement for all affected workers, and a return to meaningful negotiations.

Ernesto Medrano, Executive Secretary of the LA/OC Building Trades Council, voiced his support for the Teamsters, stating, "The lockout by National Ready Mixed shows a complete disregard for these dedicated men and women. The Building Trades stand united with the Teamsters in demanding accountability and fair wages for all workers."

Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents approximately 1.3 million working individuals across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
