Steward Healthcare Faces Bankruptcy Challenges Next Week
Steward Healthcare Crisis Events for Next Week
Upcoming Hearing: Sale of Hospitals
On Wednesday, September 4, at 11 a.m. ET, a crucial hearing will take place in Bankruptcy Court to discuss the sale of five hospitals. This session, overseen by Judge Christopher Lopez, centers around the asset purchase agreements paved by Steward Healthcare, a lending entity, and the Commonwealth. Key discussions will revolve around the acquisition of various hospitals, including Good Samaritan Medical Center which is slated for purchase by Boston Medical Center, and Holy Family Hospitals that will be acquired by Lawrence General Hospital.
Among the other facilities involved, Morton Hospital and Saint Anne's Hospital are intended for sale to Lifespan, located in Providence. Additionally, there are state plans to take St. Elizabeth's Medical Center by eminent domain, transitioning it to Boston Medical Center. Continued Opposition Against Hospital Closures
The Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) persists in its opposition to the proposed closure of Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. The MNA criticizes the Department of Public Health's notion that impacted communities should "imagine a new future for healthcare" without these vital services. The MNA firmly believes that without intervention, the closure of these hospitals could lead to a public health crisis.
President Katie Murphy articulated the MNA's position, emphasizing that the only acceptable solution is to keep both facilities operational as full-service hospitals. The proposed replacement of Nashoba Valley Medical Center with an urgent care center by UMass Memorial is regarded as inadequate. Murphy stated that an urgent care center cannot substitute emergency and acute-level care nor can it accommodate the 20 urgently needed psychiatric beds.
Call for Community Action
The MNA continues to engage local public officials and potential bidders in the effort to restore Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. Murphy reiterated, “What our communities genuinely need is not merely a suggestion to plan for the loss of their hospitals, but active support and commitment to preserve them.”
The association is adamant that removing these hospitals will exacerbate healthcare challenges, forcing patients to seek emergency services at overcrowded facilities further away. This threatens the accessibility and quality of care for the approximately 155,000 residents reliant on full-service healthcare.
Media Inquiries
For reports wishing to connect with nurses from the Steward-owned facilities represented by MNA, except St. Anne's, please reach out to David Schildmeier. His contact details remain accessible through the MNA.
Connect with the Massachusetts Nurses Association

With a membership of over 25,000, the MNA ardently champions the nursing profession by establishing high standards of nursing practices, advocating for nurses' welfare, and actively lobbying legislative bodies on healthcare issues critical to both nurses and the public.
