Rapid Harvesting of U.S. Corn and Soybeans Sparks Challenges
Record Harvests of Corn and Soybeans
As U.S. farmers embark on harvesting one of the largest corn and soybean crops in history, the race is on to manage the abundance of produce. This year, farmers are harvesting at a pace not seen in years, and the implications are significant for their operations.
Impact of Prices on Crop Management
Amidst this harvesting boom, growers are also struggling with low grain prices, which hover near four-year lows, and the challenges are compounded by stiff competition for global export markets. Since farm incomes have seen a drop of 23% from a record high just two years back, the economic pressure on farmers can be intense.
Storage Challenges in a Bounteous Year
In many parts of the Midwest, farmers still have grain stored from last year, when they chose not to sell a record corn yield due to unfavorable prices. The current dry weather is propelling the harvest forward, pushing grain handlers to utilize outside storage for corn due to limited space in traditional storage bins.
“I’m glad for the nice weather, but it has been fast and furious,” remarked Brent Johnson, a dedicated corn and soybean farmer in Illinois, highlighting the challenging circumstances of this year’s extremely quick harvest.
Progress of the Current Harvest Season
Harvesting this year has been exceptionally swift, thanks to warm and dry conditions across the Corn Belt. By mid-October, the U.S. had harvested 47% of the second-largest corn crop on record, surpassing the previous five-year average of 39%. Meanwhile, the harvest of soybeans, which has historically been quicker, reached 67%, marking the fastest pace since 2012.
Transitioning from Soybeans to Corn
As soybean harvesting winds down, many farmers are pivoting their efforts towards corn, which typically yields more than three times the grain per acre compared to soybeans. In some instances, elevators in the Midwest have been overwhelmed with a surge of corn deliveries, causing lengthy wait times for trucks.
Storage and Selling Decisions
Local corn storage scenarios have led producers like Caleb Hamer to store vast amounts of corn outside. In fact, his harvested crop sat in a makeshift pile estimated to hold about 1.5 million bushels. Such instances reveal a pressing reality—many farmers find themselves harvesting faster than their storage infrastructure can handle.
Chad Henderson, founder of Prime Agricultural Consultants, pointed out the dilemma, stating, “We are harvesting a crop too fast for our storage infrastructure,” which raises vital considerations about marketing and storage choices.
Economic Impacts and Future Strategies
With the ongoing quick harvest and the pressures on local storage, many farmers are contemplating selling portions of their harvest, even at a loss. Though, some indications in corn futures suggest that they may benefit from holding onto their crop for a few more months as strategic market timing unfolds.
For instance, December corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade reflect a roughly 22-cent discount to the May 2025 contract. This market signal can encourage farmers to consider deferred selling strategies—with potential increases in earnings down the line.
Long-term Marketing Plans
Farmers are finding themselves at a crossroads with their marketing strategies, as many prefer to remain cautious amidst the fluctuations in market prices. CoBank economist Tanner Ehmke cautions against storing their harvest without making any sales, as it might lead to a more significant downturn in the market.
Chris Gibbs, an accomplished grower from Ohio, is facing this challenge head-on, stating that for the first time in nearly five decades of farming, he hasn't secured advance deals for his autumn harvests. His approach now consists of quietly waiting for the right opportunity, illustrating the uncertainty many farmers experience.
