Exactly.  And the problem is exacerbated when volcanoes erupt continuously, or even just once in a great while like Mt. St. Helens.  As you mentioned, severe sun spots can cause dramatic effects that seem to be simply overlooked by some scientists who are proclaiming the demise of the earth due to global warming.  Yet the increased radiation can sometimes be hundreds or even thousands of times greater than the norm, even though it only lasts for a few fleeting seconds or minutes.  Just thinking.  Man, tooo much of that, need a cold one.  It's gotta be 4 o'clock somewhere, right?  But hey, Get Ready!
