The coordinates place it near the kuril island chain-formerly of Japan-just N of Japanese mainland- but sneakily captured by the Soviet Union as they entered the war against Japan in the last days of the war - this puts it within days of S Korea and another day or two travel time to Shanghai/Ningbo area
