"As a result, researchers have been developing alternative approaches to target CCR5. A recent report describes a multi-pronged approach for HIV cure by using infant rhesus macaques as a model to study HIV infection in newborns. They received a combined therapy of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) that target the viral envelope, ART and leronlimab (an antibody targeting CCR5) at 72 hours post-infection. Macaques remained virus-free for 1 year without the need for continuous ART. This suggests that a combined strategy could be a way to cure new infections in children if given quickly and possibly before the viral reservoir establishes, although further work is needed to determine the safety and translation potential of such an approach. Whether this strategy could also work for adults that have been infected for years is unclear and would need further investigation."
