Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) is developing Lucid-MS around the idea that multiple sclerosis disability can progress independently of relapses, known as progression independent of relapse activity (“PIRA”). A recent article discusses chronic active, or “smoldering,” lesions and compartmentalized inflammation within the central nervous system as potential contributors to ongoing tissue damage that may not be adequately addressed by therapies focused primarily on peripheral immune activity. Lucid-MS takes a different approach by targeting myelin degradation, with the goal of preserving myelin and supporting functional recovery rather than broadly suppressing the immune system. Quantum BioPharma has also worked with Massachusetts General Hospital on PET imaging designed to assess myelin integrity and recently received clearance to begin a Phase 2 trial of Lucid-MS following Phase 1 studies that reported a favorable safety profile in healthy volunteers.
