Leading metastatic tumor subtypes most often originate from cancers of the lung, breast, prostate, and colon. While nearly any cancer can metastasize, or spread from its primary site, these types are among the most common to be identified in their metastatic stage. Metastasis is responsible for more than 90% of cancer-related deaths.
Common metastatic cancer subtypes:
Lung cancer: One of the most metastatic and lethal cancer types, lung cancer commonly spreads to the adrenal glands, bone, brain, liver, and other areas of the lungs.
Breast cancer: This is a common primary source for metastases, with cancer cells frequently spreading to the bones, brain, liver, and lungs.
Prostate cancer: Metastatic prostate cancer most often spreads to the bones, but it can also target the liver and lungs.
Colorectal cancer: The most common distant sites for colorectal cancer metastasis are the liver and lungs.
Pancreatic cancer: A very aggressive cancer that often metastasizes early, pancreatic cancer commonly spreads to the liver, lungs, and peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity).
Melanoma: This dangerous form of skin cancer frequently metastasizes to the brain, lungs, and liver.
Kidney cancer: Metastatic kidney cancer frequently spreads to the lungs, bone, liver, and brain.
