I think my dad got like $900 a month in social security, $100 from a state pension after health insurance and $75 in a veteran's pension. So, around $1000-1100 a month.
No rent or mortgage. Natural gas, electric, water phone, car insurance, car gas and car payment were like $300 a month. Groceries were maybe a $100...he had a huge garden. If he had been a renter 2-bedroom apartment was like $125 a month.
So roughly he had $575-600 a month in disposable income or 48% cost base
So, let's say $2500 for a retired person today a month X 48% = $1200. Most make less than that. Plus, most are using 80-100% of their income and if under 17k a year getting food assistance.
$1200 a month would presently cover my Rent, natural gas, electric and groceries.
I could exist if I walked.
What does $2500 equate to? $15 an hour and a 40-hour work week.
