Next week is followed by Memorial Day. I wonder how many middle and high schools across the country will or did spend an hour discussing the role of the military throughout American history?
How many students have a clue as to when and why Memorial Day became a holiday?
I would love to give a lecture to classes all week that would discuss the origin of 'The Star Spangled Banner, the crossing of the Delaware, Belleau Woods and the trench warfare of WWI, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and Iwo Jima in WWII, The Chosin Reservoir Retreat in Korea, Khe Sanh in VietNam, and the valor in the Middle East in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. I would also discuss Arlington Natl Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown.
I have a major problem with our educational system teaching worthless BS and not addressing this extremely important sector of American history.
I would also ask in each class who has any thought of going into the military to either serve on the front lines or learn a valuable skill and accrue massive educational aid for college when they get out.
Most Americans only think of Memorial Day as the start of summer and a nice picnic or meal.
Sad state of affairs that is a national disgrace.
