One of my original theories of his demise was that this particular statement did him in. I no longer think (if I ever thought this) that this was the main reason, but might be a secondary one.
When I heard him say something to the effect in one of the last ProActive videos they were considering finishing after 50 patients in the trial, I was quite concerned, didn't he learn anything from the prior errors. This would have been a reason for the others to get together and throw him on his ass out the door if he was trying to force the study to reduce the number to 50. It would also be a not for cause, but entirely justified, termination.
