McCarthy promises ‘day of reckoning’ on Afghan

In response to a wave of Republicans calling for President Joe Biden to be impeached or resign over an attack in Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy promised that there will be a “day of reckoning” but stopped short of joining the chorus of demands.
“Look, I'm extremely frustrated with this president. As I've said, if you want to be president of the free world, you have to have the faith, the trust, and the confidence of the American public. President Biden lost that yesterday,” McCarthy, a California Republican, said in a press conference on Friday.
“There will be a day of reckoning. We have a constitutional rights,” he continued. “Right now, in the next five days, everyone's responsibility should only be focused on getting the Americans out. That is what we should focus on. When that day passes, we can take up anything that hold accountable for the actions that have been taken, the lies that have been given, the misdecisions that have put Americans in harm's way, and the decision to leave Americans behind.”
WAVE OF REPUBLICANS CALL FOR BIDEN IMPEACHMENT OR REMOVAL AFTER KABUL ATTACKS
Thirteen U.S. service members and dozens of Afghan civilians were killed in a suicide bombing outside the Kabul airport on Thursday. Another 18 service members were injured. ISIS-K took responsibility for the attack.
The attack prompted a flood of calls from Republicans for Biden to resign, be impeached, or be removed by his Cabinet through a constitutional 25th Amendment process.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said in a statement that Biden “has neither the will nor the capacity to lead” and called for his resignation. Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn tweeted not only Biden should resign but that Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley “should all resign or face impeachment and removal from office.”
New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, the No. 3 Republican in the House, said Thursday that “blood is on his hands,” slamming Biden’s “weak and incompetent leadership” and calling him “unfit to be Commander-in-Chief,” but she did not directly call for his impeachment or resignation.
After the attack on Thursday, McCarthy called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to reconvene the House ahead of Aug. 31, Biden’s deadline for evacuating remaining U.S. forces from Afghanistan.
McCarthy wants to pass legislation introduced by Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher that would require the Biden administration to leave U.S. military in the country until all Americans are evacuated and have lawmakers receive additional intelligence briefings about the situation in Afghanistan.

Top Biden administration officials briefed members on Tuesday for 90 minutes, but the session ended with many still having questions. McCarthy said Friday that he had “never had such poor briefing at any given time.”
“We have a voice, and we should use it. We should bring the administration in and have them answer every single question by every single member,” McCarthy said.
