I'm not sure where you are from, or what you are basing this on, but I live in a Rocky Mt state and familiar with attitudes in a couple others. The people around here horribly underestimated Covid. But we're a conservative state that gets our news from conservative sources, so that's to be expected. I am sure there are plenty who over estimated however.

I'm on my 3rd Covid book. They have been fascinating. Still highly recommending "Preventable", by Slavitt for a fascinating history of Covid. As I remember, and as to be expected, early projections for the US were all over the place, but most reasonably projecting 1M deaths on high side and around 50K deaths on the low side. When the political leaders in power are initially projecting 1 death and then magically gone, it's no wonder many people were underestimating. However, I would think the 616,040 US deaths far outweighs the average estimate in the US.

My guess is if back in March/April 2020 you would have said 616,040 US Covid deaths were going to take place by late July 2021 most people would have laughed you out of the bar, like they tried to do to me. I was one who predicted around 800-900k US deaths because I'd heard a virologist guess 1M.

I still think we're going to top 800k deaths because Delta, Lambda, et al, and stupid. I sincerely hope Leronlimab, or anything else, proves me wrong. We are a species that can demonstrate a special kind of stupid at times.
