Like in your field of journalism, the business side of things has crept farther into medicine. In the past, both fields were probably overstaffed, including with support personnel.
Now, the doc has to learn more stuff than he/she learned already, see more patients in a shorter time period, and master the electronic medical record, all while trying to pay off debt and keep the trophy spouse happy. Yes, that's what they signed up for. Not all will succeed; some will, at the cost of their personal lives, BMI, blood pressure, HbA1c, etc.
No boohoos from me. I also don't expect docs to search hard for miracles, including during these waves of many cases. They'll rely on the FDA, organized medicine and their employers to figure out the best care, while they try to get to the end of their day and recharge for the next one. Cheers.
