Joe Biden will make his first visit to Baltimore, Maryland as chief executive next week, visiting a plant that is making corona virus vaccine as the federal government tries to significantly ramp up supplies of the shots.

The president is scheduled to appear Wednesday with the CEOs of drug makers Johnson & Johnson and Merck at Emergent BioSolutions, according to the White House.

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. is an American multinational specialty biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It develops vaccines and antibody therapeutics for infectious diseases, opioid overdoses, and provides medical devices for biodefense purposes.

Opioid Epidemic: Emergent BioSolutions Inc. is deeply involved in treating opioid addiction and overdoses. The US Opioid Epidemic, said to be the most serious and most important public health crisis of the day according to the Mayo Clinic is treated with Narcan, a nasal spray used to treat emergency opioid overdose. Naloxone, trade name “Narcan,” use has increased markedly during the opioid epidemic.

Anthrax: Emergent BioSolutions Inc. developed BioThrax first made available in 1970.  BioThrax vaccine is licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Following a study by scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (on December 19, 2008) Emergent received final FDA licensing for use of BioThrax for intramuscular injection.[ Later in 2009, Emergent received approval from the FDA to extend the shelf life of its anthrax vaccine from three to four years.

Covid-19: Emergent BioSolutions says it can make 1 billion Covid vaccine doses annually.
