Yes, smallpox seems to have been eradicated -- after CENTURIES of trying, with a world-wide effort in the last half of the 20th century. Smallpox vaccine was the FIRST vaccine invented, in 1796. For at least hundreds of years before that, in some countries in Asia they tried to prevent it by having people sniff dried pus from smallpox sores (which, surprisingly, did work for some people although some died from that attempt).
You can wait a couple of hundred years for COVID to get under control if you want. I don't want to wait -- I want good treatments available that turn COVID from a life-threatening disease that may have permanent ill effects on people who got infected, into a TREATABLE disease that is not so devastating on individuals and society.
