It is already known that Omega on its own is incapable of meeting the current requirement - let alone the increased task requirement in the 2020 MAC.
Adding the 1 x old, narrow body B707 currently being converted - many months from completion and airworthiness approval (the ex-Romanian aircraft) - isn't going to address that.
The only options for a second contractor are:
- $TMPS with the Tristars.
- Another company buying the Tristars.
- Another company trying to find aircraft to convert with a lead time exceeding a year (and consequent higher bid price per flight hour because the Tristars are already tankers and paid for).
- Another company trying to find any already converted military tankers about to be retired [none worldwide in the immediate future].
- Another company buying new from Airbus - with a lead time of over 4.25 years for producing a new A330 MRTT as slots on the production line for the next 3.5 years are already taken (and way higher bid price per flight hour because an A330 MRTT costs $300M each).
- Another company doing a deal with the USAF to buy any dual refueling method KC-10s being retired into stoarge at 309 AMARG.
