I read an article (in German unfortunately) from a science TV show here in Germany, which answered the question "Why this pandemic is not going to end very soon?"
In summary the most important statements were:
1) scientists believe that 1 infected person will on average infect 3 additional persons.
2) In order for this pandemic not to spread exponentially, about 60-70% of the population (at least within a local area or country) need to be immunized against the virus, such that max. the virus will be linearly transferred (1 person infects not more than 1 additional)
3) Since we do not have a vaccine for the virus yet, all we can do is to have that 60-70% of the population infected in a controlled way and hope that each individual's immune system will develope the anti-bodies itself.
4) It needs to happen in a controlled way, such that each local health care system is not overwhelmed with the serious cases that will surely show up, which is the reason for the saying "flatten the curve".
5) For that matter it is important to say "the sooner we all will have a vaccine, the better for all of us", as this way it is much less dangerous to immunize a large number of people and for sure a lot quicker, which in turned will reduce the burden on the world's economy.
