Covid 19 (Corona virus) cases appear to be subsiding in China. Quarantining entire cities may have actually helped to slow the spread of the disease, but improved treatment protocols have also been a big factor in slowing the progression of the virus, and Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of this protocol.
4,900 medical staff from 600 traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals and universities throughout China have been working alongside Western physicians to treat and prevent the progression of the disease.
And in Wuhan, ground zero for the outbreak, 757 TCM specialists have recently arrived to help stop the outbreak.
In Jiangxia Module Hospital, built almost overnight to treat corona virus cases, over 200 TCM practitioners have been put in charge of treatment operations. In fact, Jiangxia is entirely managed by TCM doctors.
According to China’s Wang Hesheng, deputy head of the National Health Commission, TCM has been used in more than half of the confirmed cases in Hubei province.
China Daily reported that the first group of patients have already been released from Jiangxia. Zhang Boli, president of the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that most patients receiving TCM showed improvement, and that, since the hospital began operations on February 14, none of these patients’ conditions had deteriorated.
Coronavirus Symptoms Treated With TCM
TCM's age old methods for treating fever and cough are being successfully used against corona as they were the SARS epidemic of 2003.
Wang Rongbing, chief physician at Beijing Ditan Hospital, said at a press conference recently that “TCM helped relieve symptoms and restore blood oxygen saturation, preventing the patients’ conditions from developing into critically ill cases,” .
And Liu Qingquan, one of China’s leading TCM experts indicated that TCM had been positively implemented in about 90% of COVID-19 patients. Liu said that “After analyzing case reports from different areas, we have reached a conclusion that TCM is able to prevent mild cases from getting worse” .
In Hunan and Henan provinces, discharged patients all had one thing in common: They were all treated with a combination of modern medicine and Chinese herbal medicine.
As the success of this combination became apparent, authorities in Beijing directed all Hubei agencies and hospitals to make herbal remedies available to both confirmed and suspected patients.
In Shanxi province, health authorities reported that 91.5 percent of those who have used TCM have experienced positive results.
In Guangdong and Zhejiang, the provinces with the highest rates of infection outside of Hubei— the South China Morning Post reports that patients were given herbal drinks even before they tested positive.
And that Guangdong’s mortality rate was only 0.1%, compared with normal rates of 2.3%. And in Zhejiang province, none of the 1,155 confirmed patients had died.
Conclusion
Combining Western medicine and TCM appear to be the best approach to treating Covid-19.
