Results: The expression levels for the 3 NTFs: mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF), cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) and growth differentiation factor (GDF15) were profiled from the TCGA and GTEx databases. MANF RNA was upregulated in 9 different cancers, CDNF was up-in 1 and downregulated in 5 cancers and GDF15 was up-in 14 and downregulated in 3 cancers. qRT-PCR for MANF and CDNF from 52 patients with CRC showed that MANF is significantly upregulated 2-fold (p< 0.001) in CRC as compared to controls from the same patients, and upregulation was already seen in tumor-nearby samples. The analysis of RNA samples from 38 BC patients showed significant down-regulation for CDNF (p< 0.05). Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that NTFs indeed play a role in tumors and provide the basis for the need of further study for these factors within the cancer paradigm.
