Maraviroc is a CCR5 in-hibitor that is Foodand Drug Administra-tion approved as an antiretroviralagainst HIV. In Parkinson’s disease(PD) brains, there is an upregula-tion of both RANTES and eotaxin, which both bind CCR5. In thisissue, Mondal et al. (p. 3412) in-vestigate whether maraviroc treat-ment can mitigate the effects of PDin monkeys. Oral maraviroc treat-ment reduced T cell infiltrates inthe brains of hemiparkinsonian monkeys. Maraviroc treatmentalso reduced the inflammatory state of glial cells and intra-cytoplasmic inclusions but restored mitochondrial biogenesis inbrains affected by PD. Most importantly, maraviroc treatmentled to functional improvement in hemiparkinsonian monkeys, while producing no physical or biochemical adverse effects. These data provide strong evidence that the neuroprotectiveeffects of maraviroc may lead to a potential treatment for PD.
