Right now I don't think the directors know the process is uneconomical and, in fact, Mr. Brain has stated in the past that he believes founder Mr. Bordynuik's story about a crude oil analog and diesel being produced from waste plastic for under $10/bbl. I suspect he probably still does believe that.
However, unawareness or not, there's a point where it's negligent for the directors to be unaware of PTOI's situation and where they become culpable despite their ignorance. They're potentially buying a lot of trouble for the de minimis pay they're getting as directors. The two directors need to step up and do their duty to shareholders, not continue to play the role of Mr. Heddle's mindless and unquestioning puppets.
