I’ve been pondering an overheard conversation for a while and still don’t know what to think of it.
While riding mass transit on my way home last week there were two young men across the aisle from each other in the row behind me who were talking about work. I wouldn’t call it eavesdropping because they were making no effort to hide their conversation.
It seems they had worked together in an entry level “back office” position at a local trading firm. One had moved to a trading position at another firm and the other made an internal move to the trading desk.
When asked how his day was the other said he had lost $22k but fortunately his boss wasn’t upset. He then said it would have been much worse “but "Nite" helped me out”. The other commented that one of the advantages of starting in the back office is “you get to know those guys”.
The conversation moved on to a third person who had been terminated after a series of bad deals. Again, “yeah, they’ll help you out for only so long but they have their limits”.
I now regret not turning around and to see if I could strike up a conversation but at the time I didn’t know how much further they would go. No specific stock was mentioned.
I also regret not having recorded it on my phone.
I’d left work early that day so they’re not on my regular ride. I’m hoping to encounter them again by switching up my schedule every once in awhile.
I don’t know if I’m correctly interpreting their conversation because to me it sounded like Nite “helped” this trader to minimize a customer’s loss. And I’m still doing a slow burn when I think about some poor slob like me paying for some trader’s mistake.
My question is, did I overhear two traders discussing a crime?
