We know it was from stoking fear, inflaming conspiracy theory and playing to the deepest darkest places in the human mind.
His base is the easily gullible, lowest on the intellectual scale (proven through factual data on those without a HS diploma), the most hateful and bigoted, and mostly pissed about the "deplorable" condition of their lives. Not all of them, but enough to make the difference.
I'd go as far as saying that the polls don't matter as long as Trump keeps conning the con-able, inciting violence through word and stoking the fears of those looking for a demagogue to follow.
