Sorry for the politics, but the legalization of cannabis is all about politics, it's supported substantially by Democrats, and it's Republicans that are holding it up. Much the same can be said for things like development of placental stem cells and many other scientific advancements. Likewise climate science, etc. Even the age of the earth itself is still believed to be thousands of years old by some leaders in the Republican Party, who use the Bible as their reference point, rather than science which supports over 4 billion years old.
I'm certainly not saying that nearly all Republicans hold these views, but in the past sufficient numbers in key political positions have held up legislation or watered it down in such a manner that we're not the world leader in things like the medical use of cannabis, placental stem cells, etc. In Europe they're mandating electric cars in the near future, here we're lowering future standards for improved gas mileage. I'm 75, I'm not worried about the climate changing that much in the remainder of my life to make it difficult for mankind to survive, but I strongly believe life for my kids, and grandchildren if they ever have them will be affected dramatically if things aren't turned around. I'm all for cutting unnecessary bureaucracy, but not for permitting greater pollution. I believe that big growth and support for the environment can coexist, and even support one another.
Yes, I'm a Democrat, but I agreed with lowering the corporate tax rate, but I thought it should come with getting rid of all sorts of tax legislation that prevented many companies from paying taxes at all. I didn't support the tax breaks that give the wealthiest people the greatest benefits as these people don't need any benefit at all, but the people in the middle and the bottom do.
In short, I'll support any Congress that legalizes cannabis, but I suspect it will take a Democratic Congress to get the job done.
