Cognitive Systems Extends WiFi Motion Leadership with Leaf Nodes, Bringing Precise Motion Detection to the Smart Home

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- COMPUTEX - Cognitive Systems Corp. , creators of Aura WiFi Motion™ technology, announced today the Aura WiFi Motion stack now takes advantage of nearly all WiFi devices, “Leaf” nodes, connected to a network. This results in more precise motion detection and automation as well as expanded motion sensing coverage in the home. To date, Cognitive Systems is the only company to bring WiFi Motion sensing technology to the market, available in a direct to consumer product, Aura Home Monitoring . Additionally, with this breakthrough, Cognitive Systems expands its leadership position in WiFi Motion and is one step closer to its vision of the Cognitive Home: a home where all IoT devices, even from different manufacturers, work in harmony to offer the best value for the consumer.

The average home in North America has 13 WiFi devices. This number is estimated to reach 50 by 2020 [ source ]. With the Leaf node architecture, Cognitive Systems is taking advantage of this trend and has leveraged the home WiFi network to function as a WiFi Motion sensing platform, eliminating the need for traditional motion sensors. Unlike other sensors that use light or heat, Aura WiFi Motion uses wireless radio frequency (RF) signals to detect motion in the home, and is more dependable, since it limits false detections. Aura WiFi Motion has the ability to see through walls and in the dark, for full home coverage.

The Cognitive Home is a smart home where every connected device utilizes WiFi Motion for context of its surroundings. This, combined with sensor fusion and machine learning, ushers in an era of making connected devices smart, by providing insight and  an understanding of user routines and preferences and anticipating what’s needed next. The new user interface (UI) to the Cognitive Home is no UI at all: light switches on walls become relics and even voice for home control becomes a thing of the past.

“At Cognitive Systems, we bring proven and practical applications of WiFi Motion to the market. Our extensive testing and QA processes have enabled us to productize our technology and deliver a robust feature set for the real world. This is a major leap beyond experiments conducted in a controlled environment, which while exciting, are not replicable in reality,” said Taj Manku, CEO and co-founder of Cognitive Systems. “With the introduction of our patent pending Leaf node architecture for WiFi Motion, we continue to expand our technology leadership in RF Sensing and are proud to offer this on WiFi platforms from Qualcomm, a company that uniquely strives to bring the smart home to the next, intuitive level.”

“Qualcomm Technologies is helping revolutionize the smart home through the Qualcomm® Mesh Networking Platform, by providing cutting-edge connectivity and unique platform capabilities, like motion detection,” said Gopi Sirineni, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “By offering Aura Wi-Fi Motion as a platform feature, Cognitive Systems is providing a new and essential user interface to advance smart home experiences.”

Aura WiFi Motion™ Stack is available for licensing to companies developing products for the smart home, such as mesh routers, cameras, TVs, speakers, voice assistants and other IoT devices using WiFi chipsets from Qualcomm Technologies, Cypress and Marvell.

Cognitive Systems made this announcement today while at Computex Taipei, the leading global information and communication technologies and IoT trade show. Cognitive Systems will be showing live demos of its Aura WiFi Motion™ technology, available today, at the Starwood W Hotel Taipei - 10 Zhongxiao East Road Sec. 5, Xinyi District, Taipei, 110, Taiwan.
