NeighborWorks America recognizes 35th annual week of service

Washington, D.C., May 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Thousands of volunteers, businesspeople, and local and national elected and civic leaders will join together June 2-9 for a week of community service as part of NeighborWorks Week, sponsored by the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp. dba NeighborWorks America, and its network of more than 240 local organizations. Nonprofits around the country will organize more than 150 events, ranging from neighborhood cleanups, to park beautification, to classes on financial literacy and homeownership. “Every day, in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, members of the NeighborWorks network strive to strengthen their communities, create opportunities for affordable housing, and provide valuable resources to help people improve their live,” said Jeffrey Bryson, interim president and chief executive officer of NeighborWorks America. “NeighborWorks Week celebrates the network’s tireless efforts and highlights our vital partnership with residents, civic and business leaders.” A few examples of this year's NeighborWorks Week events are: •    Detroit, Michigan: Southwest Solutions will host its 12th annual Neighborhood Beautification Day June 2, during which more than 300 volunteers will install or refresh flower beds and community gardens, weed and mulch, paint park equipment and clear overgrown brush and debris at community locations in southwest Detroit. •    Knoxville, Tennessee: HomeSource will hold an event at Riverbirch Village and Willow Place Senior Apartments, where staff and volunteers will landscape a new sidewalk to allow residents to access a nearby shopping center. Volunteers also will deliver goods for the property's food pantry. •    Rancho Cucamonga, California: Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services will host a Homeownership Resource Fair June 9. Attendees will learn about available down payment assistance services, the homebuying process, affordable homes for sale, and energy-efficiency programs. Participants will have an opportunity to check their credit scores and meet with a counselor onsite to determine if they are ready to buy and what they can afford. •    Woodsocket, Rhode Island: NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley will host an event to help unbanked individuals learn about the banking process, including the benefits in terms of credit building and savings. The organization organized the event after identifying a large number of tenants who pay their rent via money order, thus paying fees that quickly add up. A workshop will teach participants how to use common apps that facilitate saving and budgeting. For more information about NeighborWorks Week, visit http://www.neighborworks.org/nww.
