Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she shares President Trump's frustration with the United States' "broken" immigration system and Congress' inaction on fixing it.
She particularly pointed to asylum fraud, which has been thrust back into the spotlight in recent weeks with dozens of migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum and entry into the country.
"It’s really frustrating, I’ve got to be honest. I really share the president’s frustration on this, and that of the American people," Nielsen said on "The Ingraham Angle."

She explained that many claims for asylum are fraudulent, and that illegal immigrants can take advantage of the sometimes years-long asylum process by living in the U.S. while their claims are adjudicated.
"So, we’ve asked Congress to fix this loophole. It’s a huge, gaping loophole that we need fixed, because it’s so abused," Nielsen said.
She added that they have also pushed the Senate to pass Kate's Law, which would increase penalties for criminals who have been deported who illegally return to the U.S. The bill passed in the House last summer.
Nielsen said achieving border security is actually an "easy formula," calling for closing the loopholes, building a border wall, giving immigration authorities the necessary funding and personnel, and ending the policy of apprehension without detention or removal.
"Border security is part and parcel to the sovereignty of a nation," Nielsen said. "Here’s the President of the United States saying, 'I want to secure this country. Americans must come first.' And Congress is saying, 'Yeah, we don’t have time. We’re busy. We’ve got to go on recess.'"
