I think if you can put your paragraph into a a few questions, that will help Maui get it on the list.
As far as salespeople. There are some that kind of ruin it for the rest. Like others, I'll just go educate myself on the internet. If the company doesn't go through the trouble of putting enough info on their website for me to quickly figure out what they are selling, I move on to the next vendor.
I'll give you a true sales example. Some people I work with wanted a demo of a company's product last week. I said why don't you just go to their website, watch a few videos, etc. No, they wanted to talk to someone, so I set up a call/demo. When we spoke to the guy and asked when he was going to do a demo, he said go out to the website and we have 100's of videos there on every topic and quite frankly they can do a better demo than I can.
This is where selling is moving too. Won't work for every product, but if I'm a company, I rather put some money into a video and reuse it over and over again rather than having the sales person do the same thing over and over again.
Your point about education is true. I think I've been to some dealerships where the sales people are more there to answer questions and educate. Refreshing when I don't get the high pressure sales tactic.
The other thing about sales from a buyer perspective is I may only have 5 minutes to look at something. Maybe I spend 5 minutes each looking at 4 different products from different companies. I don't have time for 4, one hour meetings with a sale rep. That would be 1/2 my day vs less than an hour. And if I did it the old way, I'd have 4 sales reps calling my every day trying to schedule more time with me.
