New Orleans Activist: Get Rid of Confederate Monuments, Rename Washington, D.C.

< >

On "The Ingraham Angle" on Thursday, Laura Ingraham debated an activist who's calling for the removal of Confederate monuments in New Orleans.

The Big Easy has been at the heart of the battle over preserving American history. The city took down four statues last May after the city council declared them a "public nuisance."

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) called the removal of the monuments a "move toward healing."

Malcolm Suber, coordinator with the group Take 'Em Down NOLA, said the city still has 20 more statues dedicated to "white supremacy" that must be taken down, in addition to hundreds of streets and parks named for members of the Confederacy and white supremacists.

"We want to wipe the slate clean. And we have challenged the mayor from the very beginning: Don't do a half-job, let's do the whole job," Suber said.

He said New Orlean's iconic Jackson Square -- which is named after Andrew Jackson -- is an "abomination" that must be removed, as should anything honoring other slave owners like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

"So we need to rename Washington, D.C., correct?" Ingraham asked.

"Yes, I would do that," Suber replied.
