Lightwave Logic's P2IC™ polymer PIC platform not only will enable data communications markets but telecommunications markets also and create an impact for optical networking in general.
The demands on polymer PICs from the fiber communications markets will mean that the polymers will be able to operate at low power, high speed, high optical integrity, be miniature in size, and highly reliable.
These metrics will allow our polymer PICs to be ideally suited for other non-communications markets that include, but are not limited to: consumer, media, augmented and virtual reality, medical, industrial etc.
In some of these markets extremely high volumes are anticipated, which means that our technology platform of polymer PICs will need to be scalable, both in high performance and low cost.
The demands by the fiber communications industry to move towards $1/Gbps type metrics also allows our technology to be perfectly suited for super high volume consumer based markets.
In analysis that has been completed at Lightwave Logic, it is anticipated that the total photonics market in fiber communications will grow from $21B today to over $43B by 2025 with a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 7%.
This market will consist of three major segments: datacom, access, and wide-area-networks.
One of the major surprises that emerged from our analysis of the market is the explosive trend of PICs (photonic integrated circuits) into fiber communications products.
PICs allow the integration of photonic devices to improve cost structures, functionality, low power, high performance, and miniaturization. It is estimated that of the $43B photonics market that is forecasted by 2025, over 69% of this market will be PIC based.
This means that PICs are forecasted to reach over $30B in revenue by 2025. It is clear that PIC based technologies will become de facto by 2025. Deeper analysis has shown the fiber optic transceiver segments within the photonics market to grow to $25B by 2025 representing 50% of the $43B total photonics market.
This indicates that not only PICs will grow significantly, but PICs will be built into transceivers as transceivers are forecasted to be the key vehicle to support the fiber communications market over the next decade.
Within the transceiver segment, the focus areas that will grow quickly over the forecast period to 2025 are the Ethernet-datacom segment, wide-area-network client-side segment, and DWDM segments.
The rise of PIC technologies for transceivers is clear: by 2021 we forecast that PIC based engines for transceivers will produce more revenue than discrete based transceivers.
We forecast that PIC based transceivers will reach $20B in revenue by 2025. PIC based transceivers will be driven by 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps data rates where 100 Gbps is forecasted to reach $4.5B by 2025 and 400 Gbps is forecasted to reach $0.9B by 2025.
The summary is that our polymer-based PIC platform that is being developed for 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps is perfectly positioned to enable the data communications, telecommunications and other associated non-communications markets over the next decade.
