Feels like manipulation to me too!
If we used making mistakes and a measure of incompetence. every coach, CEO, president, etc. would be declared incompetent and should be fired with the exception of Phil Jackson, Bill Belichick, etc. One could argue Belichick was as big of a manipulator as they come using the second definition.
