President Trump signs a directive banning transgender individuals from serving in the military.
The President directed the military on Friday, to not move forward with an Obama-era initiative allowing transgender recruits, effectively returning to the pre-2016 military policy.
The measure also prevents the Department of Defense from using its resources to provide medical treatment for transgender individuals currently serving in the military.
This comes after a tweet from the President last month, in which he said he would reinstate the ban on transgender military service, which was lifted in 2011 by former President Obama.
In a 2016 Rand Corp. study ordered by the Defense Department, concluded the number of transgender people in the military is between 1,320 and 6,630.
The cost of total health care expenditures could range from 2.4 million and 8.4 million a year.
