I have no doubt that the best American history teachers will allot time to discuss the controversial origins of the statues and place those origins in context with a society many years removed from those origins.
So, MORE history rather than less.
Belief in something is not always sufficient grounds for memorialization.
Post WWII Germany, for example, decided Nazism was not worthy of statues.
And I wouldn't worry about a shortage of heroes. They've been feted regularly at WH ceremonies for the past 13 years or so.
