I'm not nor have I refuted anything about his voting record. I'm just saying that had a picture of Trump kissing a reformed Republican Byrd popped up, the Left would have poop hemorrhaged themselves to death. Hell, I wish something like that would pop up. These things are fun to watch.
And I maintain that you ignore the circumstances, still.
If Byrd had lined up with the GOP on civil rights votes, no kissy face from Dems. That simple.
But I'd like to see a picture of Trump kissing Byrd too!

That is indeed a prime example of a classic false equivalency. My bad.
Bingo, yes, that IS false equivalency. Thank you very much. Here's why.
You've deconstructed, decoupled, neutered the meaning of Nazi by likening it simply to thuggish behavior and property destruction.
The stated agenda and documented actions of Nazism are the defining characteristics of Nazism, both historically and in the charming chants about "Jews will not replace us" and "blood and soil". WTF?!
We know what that led to 'back in the day.'
In any case, I think the responses from prominent Republicans, the service chiefs and the members of the 'business advisory board', all 'assholes and elbows' out the exit door, backs up my take that Trump badly, bigly, engaged in false equivalence and moral relativism. That last one used to be soooo important to the right.
Not so much right now, not so much.

I do agree that things are never "pure and simple". I got an email from my college roommate of two years that talked about how his Dad and uncle, both members of the KKK, spent time in Europe shooting at NAZIs.
Simplistic observation. Some soldiers understood what they were fighting, some made no connection to American values or to how they would live their lives back home in contravention of those values.
I'm guessing that Jewish American soldiers in Europe has a more coherent world view of what they were fighting against.
