Yes, I know Byrd was a Democrat and if he had been a Republican his apologies would have been ignored, at best. But I doubt the Dems and a left leaning press would have been content to have simply ignored Byrd had he been a Repubbie. In fact, I think there would probably have had panels assembled by the press featuring all sorts of left leaning psychologists to analyze the apology and explain just how phony it was.
Refresh my memory here. Wasn't there a shooting in DC not too long ago but for the grace of God/fate/justplainluck quite a few would have been dead? Now, let's add up the property damage caused by various right and left wing nuts and compare the two tabs. I wonder who has caused the most damage?
Let's face it, both sides do have a certain "element" that no one should be proud.
We got our Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787 and I think our Constitution was saved 75 years later when on Sept. 17, 1862 Lee and the South failed to secure victory at the Battle of Antietam. And because it was a Northern victory, Lincoln was able to put the Emancipation Proclamation in place which kept France, Russia, and most importantly, England and her navy out of the conflict.
All of these powers were hoping the Confederates would win the struggle but none of these powers could have motivated their populations to have gone to the defense of the slave holding south.
