Why put stuff on shelves if no one knows the company yet? Stupid. We are talking about the order of brand building.
Star Wars, Disney, even McDonald's all grew their base business....films, theme parks, and fast food respectively, before they grew their merchandising/brand. There is a proper order to doing it.
Did you see Star Wars toys before the films were a hit? No.
It's no big deal and not rocket science. If they start selling food now, with no brand awareness to drive the food, then it's just a company selling food with no brand.

One must understand what branding is....even in 2017....to get how this works. The internet doesn't change brand building. Instead of TV/radio/print now we have the internet. Still, brand building is the same.
