"Novel neurotrophins with different modes of action (compared to GDNF) have been found, such as MANF and CDNF. These factors have potent trophic effects on dopaminergic neurons. In addition, they reside in the ER, where they interact with GRP78/BiP and control ER stress. It will be critical to determine the effects of these factors in the context of Parkinson's Disease pathology, and if they can be safely delivered by gene therapy."
